California State University, Los Angeles has once again received a national award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine for its success in fostering diversity and inclusion in the University’s Patricia A. Chin School of Nursing.

The 2017 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award recognizes U.S. medical, dental, pharmacy, osteopathic, nursing, veterinary and allied health schools that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The Patricia A. Chin School of Nursing received the award for the second consecutive year based on its continued commitment to diversity and inclusion among faculty and staff, as well as students within the nursing programs. As a recipient of the Health Professions HEED Award, Cal State LA will be featured in the magazine’s December, 2017 issue.

“We are all, faculty and staff, extremely proud that we continue to sustain our commitment to diversity and academic excellence for our learners and the community we serve,” said Gail Washington, director of Cal State LA’s Patricia A. Chin School of Nursing.

Cal State LA’s nursing master’s degree program is ranked one of the best in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report2018 “Best Grad Schools.”

The Patricia A. Chin School of Nursing, which is in the Rongxiang Xu College of Health and Human Services, comprises approximately 500 undergraduate nursing students, 175 graduate students and 12 tenured and tenure-track faculty.

The graduate program offers a Nursing Education option and nurse-practitioner options in Adult Gerontology Primary Care, Adult Gerontology Acute Care, Family, and Family Psychiatric Mental Health. Cal State LA launched a joint Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program in fall 2012.

The Patricia A. Chin School of Nursing’s programs are approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing and accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine is the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT, said the selection process for the award is comprehensive and rigorous, including questions relating to recruitment and retention of students and continued leadership support for diversity. This year, 23 schools received the award.
