Cal State LA President William A. Covino was elected as president of the executive committee of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU).
The announcement was made Wednesday following elections that were held virtually during a meeting earlier this week of the CUMU president’s council. CUMU member institutions are dedicated to engaging and enriching their communities through strategic partnerships that provide pathways to higher education and promote economic development and urban revitalization.
“I’m honored to now serve as president of CUMU,” Covino said. “Relationships are at the heart of CUMU’s work. By fostering and strengthening relationships with communities across the nation, we increase our capacity to be a part of positive change. I look forward to continuing the collaboration that is the hallmark of CUMU.”
Covino has served as the CUMU executive committee’s vice president/treasurer since his election to that position in 2018. He will serve a two-year term as president.
In 2018, CUMU and The Democracy Collaborative launched the Higher Education Anchor Mission Initiative to use the expertise and resources of colleges and universities to develop solutions to pressing problems and help the communities they serve flourish. The initiative is supported by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.
Cal State LA was one of 33 higher education institutions selected to lead the initiative as anchor institutions, or mission-driven organizations that serve as economic engines in their regions and are linked to the long-term well-being of their local communities.
