Cal State LA to be honored as one of ACUE’s inaugural Movement Maker

The Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) has named Cal State LA a Movement Maker for demonstrating an enduring commitment to the success of all students. 

The university will be presented a Movement Maker award along with the California State University (CSU) system and Cal State Northridge during the inaugural National Higher Education Teaching Conference (NHETC) that will take place June 22-23 in New York City. 

“We’re honored to be named a Movement Maker,” said Catherine Haras, executive director of the Center for Effective Teaching and Learning (CETL) at Cal State LA. “It has been a privilege working with ACUE to increase the professional learning of Cal State LA faculty; over 450 faculty members have completed some level of ACUE programming–10% have completed the full ACUE certificate.”  

Cal State LA and Cal State Northridge, and the CSU system, have partnered with ACUE since 2016 to ensure that faculty use innovative, relevant, evidence-based teaching practices that place equitable student success at the forefront. 

“They are the institutions that stand out for their leadership on teaching and learning, that have centered teaching in their strategy for student success and equity, who are celebrating faculty members for their commitment to the craft of teaching, and who have demonstrated measurable impact of effective teaching on student outcomes,” said ACUE Chief Academic Officer Penny MacCormack. 

In 2016, Cal State LA’s CETL launched a comprehensive training and credentialing program, offered through the ACUE and administered online, to promote student success through great teaching. The program enabled the center to expand its successful Course Redesign for Student Success program, which features online professional development modules focusing on effective teaching practices.  

In addition, CETL has designed and launched a faculty development module on civic learning for ACUE. Cal State LA faculty members have also been featured in ACUE blogs on various topics, ranging from student-centered teaching strategies to engaging students in the digital age.  In 2019, the center participated in an ACUE research study on its groundbreaking work in removing remedial math courses. Most recently, the university conducted its own published research about the impact of ACUE on faculty behavior. 

Cal State LA was recognized by the American Council on Education (ACE) in a 2017 report that profiles the university’s exemplary efforts to raise student outcomes through effective instruction. The report highlighted how Cal State LA’s CETL is a “crucial lever” in the university’s plan to achieve its ambitious student success goals set through the CSU’s Graduation Initiative 2025. 

Focusing on the theme of “Accelerating Student Success, Belonging, and Equity,” the National Higher Education Teaching Conference will bring together university and college presidents, provosts, professors, students, policymakers, and philanthropists for two inspiring days to bridge policy and practice, learn practical strategies, and center the impact of faculty on higher education’s agenda. 

“NHETC is an opportunity to explore the ways that all institutions can provide their students with high-quality teaching through insightful plenary and concurrent sessions combined with the chance to have some fun and celebrate higher education leaders from around the country,” said ACUE President and Co-founder Jonathan Gyurko. “It is fitting that these higher ed stars will be honored for their commitment to transforming the student learning experience through excellent instruction at our NHETC Awards Dinner, hosted by Tony and  Grammy nominated Broadway star Max von Essen.” 

In addition to ACUE, co-hosts for the NHETC include the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the City University of New York, the ECMC Foundation, Excelencia in Education, the National Association of System Heads, Strada Education Foundation, the Raikes Foundation, the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and the American Council on Education. Participating publishers include Corwin-Sage Publishing, Harvard Education Press, Hopkins Press, SUNY Press, West Virginia Press and Wiley.
