The Golden Globe Foundation is continuing its longstanding support of Cal State LA with two grants announced last week for the university’s television, film, and journalism programs.

Cal State LA will receive a $30,000 grant for its Television, Film, and Media Fund and a $10,000 grant for its Diversity in Journalism Fund for the 2024-25 academic year.

“This is our department’s 25th year of support from the Golden Globe Foundation. These GGF grants have supported internships, films, film festivals, equipment, software, and scholarships that have changed the lives of individual students and dramatically impacted the work and experiences our department can offer our student filmmakers and journalists,” said Professor Kristiina Hackel, chair of the Department of Television, Film and Media Studies (TVFM) at Cal State LA.

This year, the grant awards are being given to a diverse group of 83 nonprofits through the foundation’s philanthropic program. The contributions provide a multitude of resources and services to programs that educate, enrich, and empower the next generation of filmmakers and storytellers, colleges and universities, underserved communities, and film restoration projects. They also offer financial aid, assistance, and resources to journalists worldwide.

“Golden Globe Foundation is committed to investing in its community and striving for a world where all creatives flourish,” said Henry Arnaud, president of the Golden Globe Foundation. “Our organization has a longstanding history and time-honored tradition of providing support to an array of programs making a difference in arts, culture, education, journalism, and free speech protections. We are proud of what this year’s grantees have accomplished and congratulate them on the extraordinary impact they are making.”

For more than two decades, the foundation has offered transformative support to Cal State LA’s diverse, low-income students through scholarships, equipment grants, thesis fund, and emergency grants during the pandemic. This year’s grant monies will provide Cal State LA students with additional support for film festivals and their works, as well as internships in Southern California newsrooms, providing student journalists with valuable experience to help them advance their careers.

The Department of TVFM at Cal State LA offers a Bachelor of Arts in Television, Film and Media Studies, a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, a Master of Arts in Television, Film and Media Studies, and a Master of Fine Arts in Television, Film and Theatre in collaboration with the Department of Theatre and Dance.

The MFA program brings the three creative arms of the entertainment industry—content creation, writing, and acting—together in cohorts. The Department of TVFM is housed in the state-of-the-art Television, Film and Media Center. Hollywood’s top producers, directors, screenwriters, and actors often serve as university guest speakers and mentors.

Cal State LA’s journalism program is part of the Department of TVFM. Through its classes, student media outlets, and collaborations with professional newsrooms, Cal State LA’s journalism program trains students who have been traditionally underrepresented in newsrooms. Cal State LA’s journalism students have been honored with over two dozen awards and honors in recent years.

“Beyond the grant itself, the Golden Globe Foundation has created a network of grantees, allowing us to learn about our shared missions and form a community of support. We are deeply honored to be a Golden Globe grantee, and we celebrate Golden Globe Foundation for their 25 years of commitment to our students and university,” Hackel added.

Since 1989, the Golden Globe Foundation (and its predecessor Hollywood Foreign Press Association) has donated more than $55 million to entertainment-related nonprofit organizations, academic programs, and organizations protecting press freedom, and has funded the restoration of 138 classic films.

Funding for the foundation’s philanthropy is made possible from revenue generated by licensing fees from the Golden Globe® Awards.
