Cal State LA is commemorating Black History Month with a series of events throughout February.
The events—13 of them altogether—celebrate the extraordinary lives, amazing accomplishments, and historic contributions of Black people in the United States.
The official Black History Month Kick-Off will be held on Monday, Feb. 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Golden Eagle Ballroom.
But two days prior, on Saturday, Feb. 1, The Luckman will host a concert celebrating the legendary jazz music of the Crescent City. “Jazz at Lincoln Center Presents: New Orleans Songbook” will feature pianist Luther S. Allison, vocalists Quiana Lynell and Milton Suggs, and the music that made New Orleans the historic epicenter of jazz.
The rest of February will be filled with educational, historical, artistic, and just plain fun gatherings. There will be online indabas, an alumni mixer, a Black student debate, an “Afrique en Cirque” performance, a discussion on dating, and more.
The month-long celebration culminates with a pair of events on Tuesday, Feb. 25. The “Paint N’ Sip Extravaganza!” invites art enthusiasts for an afternoon of painting and libations.
Later that evening, the 3rd Annual C.R.D. Halisi Black History Month Indaba 3, 2025 will pay tribute to Malcolm X with the discussion “Malcolm X: Sankofa, Black Power and Pan-Africanism.” The centennial anniversary of Malcolm X’s birthday will be celebrated later this year on May 19.
The various events were organized by the Cross Cultural Centers; Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Engagement; Department of Pan-African Studies; Black Student Union; Luckman Fine Arts Complex; Rongxiang Xu College of Health and Human Services; Communication Disorders Department; University Library; New Student and Family Engagement; Educational Opportunity Program; and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging.
