Cal State LA is requesting donations of essential supplies to support campus community members who were impacted by the recent Los Angeles wildfires.
The Wildfire Recovery Drive is asking for donations of non-perishable foods, hygiene products, and household essentials that will be distributed to students, staff, and faculty. Six drop-off locations have been set up around the campus to collect donations between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays through Friday, Feb. 28.
Based on past recovery drives, organizers recommend donations of non-perishable items such as rice, pasta, beans, protein bars, fruit snacks, canned food, and bottled water.
“We’re looking for food items that students, faculty, and staff can hopefully keep and use over a prolonged period of time,” said Frangelo Ayran, senior associate dean with the Office of the Dean of Students.
Necessary hygiene products include shampoo, soap and bodywash, toothpaste, feminine products, and deodorant. New or gently used blankets, pillows, towels, and kitchenware are also in demand.
The Office of the Dean of Students organized the drive and has collaborated with colleges and campus partners to provide six convenient drop-off points for the donations, which are listed below.
Ayran says 39 Cal State LA students have indicated they lost their homes to the wildfires when they applied for assistance through the Golden Eagle LA Fires Recovery Fund. He says that total could grow in coming weeks.
“If you’ve lost your home, contacting your school might not be necessarily the first thing you do,” he said. “There could be a leveling off for applications, but you never know where students might be. If you lost your home that could include your laptop and your phone, and you can’t even apply for programs like ours.”
