Cal State LA will welcome 50 high school students from all across California to campus from June 27 to June 29 for the inaugural Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project (CLYLP) Los Angeles Institute. The three-day program will immerse students in leadership development and civic engagement through workshops and on-campus experiences.

Cal State LA is partnering with CLYLP, a nonprofit that builds the leadership capacity of California’s youth, to bring this impactful summer program to the university for the first time. Students will stay in campus housing and participate in sessions focused on college access, public policy, advocacy, and community empowerment.

“At CLYLP, we are committed to strengthening the cultural identity, educational achievement, and civic engagement of students across California, a mission that we share with the California State University system,” said Luisa Ortega, executive director of CLYLP. “As part of its broader commitment to equity and educational opportunity, the CSU system continues to serve as a valued partner in this work. CSU campuses host our Central Valley Institute and our Statewide Leadership Conference, and now, we’re very proud to bring our institute to Cal State LA.”

In support of CLYLP’s mission statewide, the CSU Office of the Chancellor has contributed $20,000 to help expand access and impact.

“The Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project has a powerful legacy of nurturing the next generation of civic and community leaders,” said Omar Gonzales, executive director of External Affairs and University Relations at Cal State LA. “As a proud alumnus, I know firsthand how transformative CLYLP’s programs are in helping students embrace their cultural identity, develop their leadership voice, and chart a path to higher education and public service. On behalf of Cal State LA, we are honored to welcome CLYLP to our campus and to embark on this collaboration to prepare California’s future leaders.”

For over four decades, more than 7,000 high school students from throughout the state have benefited from CLYLP programs that enhance leadership skills, academic preparedness, self-esteem, cultural awareness, and provide an understanding of state and local government.

CLYLP offers multi-day regional and statewide leadership conferences for high school students, scholarships and fellowships for alumni, and cultivates a strong network for alumni and volunteers across the state. For more information, visitthe CLYLP website.
