Cal State LA continues to rank among the top universities in the nation in Washington Monthly’s annual college guide, which uses ratings based on public service, upward mobility and other factors.

The magazine’s 2019 College Ranking Guide named Cal State LA in the top 10 in both its 150 “Top Master’s Universities” and “Best Bang for the Buck Western Colleges” categories.

Cal State LA is ranked number eight in the “Top Master’s Universities” category, which includes U.S. institutions that grant graduate degrees. Cal State LA is also ranked number five in the West in the “Best Bang for the Buck” category.

“Fully 60 percent of students at fifth-ranked Cal State Los Angeles are the first in their families to attend college, one of the highest rates in the country,” Robert Kelchen of Washington Monthly wrote. The publication commended Cal State LA and the California State University for its “commitment to upward mobility across the system and the state.”

The magazine rates universities based on their contribution to the public good, considering factors that include research, providing opportunities for public service and social mobility.

“We are especially proud of these rankings because they recognize our continued commitment to community service and the public good,” Cal State LA President William A. Covino said. “We’re dedicated to providing an excellent, affordable higher education experience to propel our students and their communities.”

Cal State LA is ranked number one in the nation for the upward mobility of its students and is a premier public comprehensive university in the heart of Los Angeles.
