Jennifer Garrison, professor of geology at Cal State LA, has recently received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program award to collaborate with scientists in Ecuador on an exchange program.
As a Fulbright Scholar, Garrison is developing a pathway that will offer travel and cross-cultural research experiences for Cal State LA students and students who attend Escuela Politécnica Nacional, a national polytechnic university in Quito, Ecuador. She is working with scientists who teach in the university’s geophysical institute.
“This project will provide valuable and life-changing international experiences for students from Ecuador and Cal State LA,” she said. “I am grateful to the Fulbright Program for the opportunity to carry out this project.”
Garrison’s research is focused on studying volcanoes in the Ecuadorian Andes, as well as volcanic rocks in the Mojave Desert of California. The primary goal of the project is to better understand the genesis and mantle extent of highly alkaline lavas in the rear arc of Ecuador.
A Cal State LA faculty in the College of Natural and Social Sciences since 2007, Garrison also serves as director of the university’s Natural Science Program. She teaches courses in mineralogy, volcanology and igneous petrology, and she conducts geological research. Garrison received her Ph.D. in geology from UCLA.
Garrison is among more than 800 U.S. citizens who will teach or conduct research abroad for the 2023-2024 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program.
Fulbright Scholars engage in cutting-edge research and expand their professional networks, often continuing research collaborations started abroad and laying the groundwork for forging future partnerships between institutions.
Cal State LA is designated as a Fulbright HSI Leader by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program and is supported by the people of the United States and partner countries around the world. The Fulbright Program is funded through an annual appropriation made by the U.S. Congress to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
