‘Blood In Blood Out’ celebrates its 30th anniversary with screening and book release at Cal State LA
Thousands of fans and film aficionados converged at Cal State LA on Jan. 20 for the 30th anniversary celebration of Hollywood Pictures’ epic crime drama Blood In Blood Out. The celebration featured the release of a limited-edition book and the film was screened for the first time since its 1993 release. Read more about the event.

Cal State LA receives grant to create an employment program for formerly incarcerated college graduates
Cal State LA has received a $900,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to establish a Prison to Careers Equity Pathway program that will link formerly incarcerated college graduates with regional employers and community organizations to work toward achieving an equitable workforce. TVFM student included as nominee for 74th American Cinema Editors Eddie Awards
In 2023, after an eight-year hiatus from his studies at Cal State LA, Jaime Diaz returned to the Television, Film, and Media Studies program within the College of Arts and Letters. In the year since resuming his academic journey, Diaz is one of three student nominees for the Anne V. Coates Award for Student Editing. The winner of the student editing category will be announced on March 3 at the 74th ACE Eddie Awards, one of the longest-running awards shows in the entertainment industry. The student editing competition is named in honor of the late Anne V. Coates, best known for her Oscar-winning work editing the film Lawrence of Arabia. Read more about Jaime’s journey.

Black History Month at Cal State LA
Join us for a month of “Resurgence and Renewal” as we celebrate local artists, Black-owned businesses, cultural identity, and the courageous efforts of students, staff, faculty, and alumni. The Pan-African Studies Department, the Alumni Association, the Division of Student Life, and other campus departments have joined together to deliver a February full of fun, art, wellness, and important conversations. Give blood at upcoming American Red Cross blood drives
Students, faculty, staff, and community members can give blood on campus during upcoming American Red Cross blood drives on Feb. 1 and Feb. 15. Learn more about the blood drives.

Income tax filing services offered by Cal State LA VITA
The College of Business and Economics’ Department of Accounting, in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service, is offering Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) to low- and moderate-income individuals. The free VITA program will run each Saturday through April 13. Visit the Cal State LA VITA website for more information.
Athletics
Golden Eagle Hoops eye conference playoff path
Cal State LA men’s basketball propelled its way into the national conversation with the program’s best start, earning the team’s first national ranking since 2000. The 14-5 (9-4 CCAA) Golden Eagles currently sit in a share of second place. Meanwhile, the 9-9 (6-7 CCAA) women’s hoops squad is tied for the conference’s final playoff spot and is just one game back of fourth place. Both teams have nine conference games remaining, five of which will be played at the University Gym. Tickets can be purchased on the Cal State LA Athletics website.
Cal State LA soars into top 10 of LEARFIELD Cup fall standings
Propelled by volleyball’s spectacular run to its first national championship title and NCAA appearances for men’s and women’s soccer, Cal State LA Athletics secured a program-best eighth-place standing out of 155 NCAA Division II programs in the final fall season rankings of the LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup. Points toward Directors’ Cup standings are awarded based on each institution’s finish in NCAA Championships.

Silverman Gallery ‘Earth and Ember’ features alumni artwork
The Ronald H. Silverman Fine Arts Gallery at Cal State LA presents a ceramic exhibition titled “Earth and Ember” on display through Feb. 22, featuring works by ceramic artists, including alumni and internationally renowned artists who contributed to ceramic education.
