Berenecea Johnson Eanes appointed president of Cal State LA
The California State University Board of Trustees has appointed Dr. Berenecea Johnson Eanes to serve as president of Cal State LA. Eanes currently serves as president of York College, City University of New York. “I am honored to join this outstanding university and its vibrant and diverse campus community,” Eanes said. “I look forward to engaging and collaborating with Cal State LA’s talented students, staff and faculty to continue the institution’s journey to new heights in student success, research, scholarship and creative activity, and community engagement.” Eanes will become the university’s first woman president. She succeeds Interim President Leroy M. Morishita, who has served in the role since the retirement of President Emeritus William A. Covino at the end of July 2023. Cal State LA students to participate in #CaliforniansForAll College Corps Launch Event
A group of Cal State LA students will pledge to serve their communities this academic year during an Oct. 9 swearing-in ceremony as part of the #CaliforniansForAll College Corps Launch Event for the Los Angeles region. More than 50 College Corps fellows will commit to serve in the communities through the East Los Angeles and San Gabriel Valley Regional Consortium at Cal State LA. College Corps is a statewide, paid service program that provides meaningful work to college students in exchange for serving their community. The program helps participants graduate on time and with less debt while gaining valuable work experience. The event will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at the UCLA Carnesale Commons. Cal State LA continues to climb in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges rankings
Cal State LA continues to soar as one of the nation’s top regional universities in the U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings. Cal State LA ranks 21st among all private and public regional universities in the western United States, rising three spots from the previous year, according to the 2024 rankings recently released. During the past ten years, Cal State LA has jumped 75 spots among all private and public regional universities in the West. “Cal State LA’s continued ascent in the rankings reflects our commitment to our students’ success,” said Interim President Leroy M. Morishita. “Our dedicated faculty and staff play a central role in creating an environment where students thrive.” Read more about the rankings.
Cal State LA computer science major receives CSU Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Achievement
Patrick Emmanuel Sangalang, a computer science major in the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology at Cal State LA, is one of 23 students statewide to receive the 2023 California State University Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Achievement. The award is given each year to students who demonstrate superior academic performance, personal accomplishments, community service, and financial need. Sangalang was honored on Sept. 12 with the top academic achievement award in the CSU system. He will be awarded $7,000 and named a Michael A. and Debe Lucki Scholar. Read more about the honoree.
Chicanx Latinx Heritage Month celebration begins this month
Cal State LA is celebrating Chicanx Latinx Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 to recognize the contributions of Latinx Americans and the richness of the cultural history of those with ancestries typically from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. This year’s theme is “Joy, Ease, and Community,” making space for our Chicanx Latinx community to enhance togetherness and joy. Visit the website for the listing of events.
Cal State LA presents the play Eurydice in eight performances
The Department of Theatre and Dance at Cal State LA presents a modern adaptation of the classic Greek myth of Eurydice, written by MacArthur Award playwright Sarah Ruhl. Eurydice is a poetic play that reimagines the classic myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, focusing on Eurydice’s journey in the Underworld after her untimely death on her wedding day. Directed by MFA in TVFT/Content Creation student Henry Alexander Meza, the Eurydice production will be performed at the Cal State LA Arena Theatre for eight performances from Oct. 12 to Oct. 21. Tickets are $12 for general admission and $5 for students. Find details and ticket information online.
Cal State LA begins accepting applications for fall 2024 on Oct. 1
Cal State LA will begin to accept applications for admission for fall semester 2024 on Oct. 1. Freshmen and transfer students interested in attending Cal State LA can apply online using the Cal State Apply application portal. The priority application deadline is Nov. 30. Prospective students and their families are invited to Golden Eagle Fest on Nov. 18 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to see our beautiful campus and learn why they should apply to Cal State LA.

Chicanx Latinx University Alumni Network Mixer
Join the Cal State LA Alumni Association in celebrating Latinx Heritage Month at the Chicanx Latinx University Alumni Network Mixer on Friday, Oct. 6, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., in the Golden Eagle Ballrooms. Reconnect with old friends and meet new people from the greater Cal State LA community. This mixer is open to alumni, current students, staff, faculty, and community members. Please register online by Sept. 29.

Freshman golfer wins championship in first-ever collegiate tournament
Cal State LA’s Daniela Andrade had a remarkable debut at the 2023 RJGA Shootout at Estrella, winning the tournament and tying a program record with a final-round 69 to secure the individual championship. The freshman’s impressive performance also contributed to the Golden Eagles’ third-place team finish and a new program 36-hole scoring record. Andrade’s performance made her just the second player in program history to win CCAA Golfer of the Week Honors, as well as win a tournament.
Men’s Soccer and Volleyball continue run amongst nation’s best
Cal State LA volleyball and men’s soccer continue to be ranked among the top 25 in the nation as 2023 conference play begins. No. 6 men’s soccer (5-0-1), which has outscored their opponents 11-2 this season, continues its run in the top-10 after a 1-1 draw against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday. No. 25 Volleyball (5-7, 3-1 CCAA) began the season with eight matches against top-ranked teams at the Yotes Classic Showcase before winning three of their first four conference matches. Both teams return home on Friday for Homecoming, which will also mark the start of conference play for both men’s and women’s soccer.
