Cal State LA partners with Cal Volunteers, Office of the Governor to highlight the importance of civic service
California Chief Service Officer Josh Fryday, Assemblymember Mike Fong, and East Los Angeles College President Alberto J. Román joined President Berenecea Johnson Eanes at Cal State LA to announce the recruitment of thousands of people throughout L.A. County to join the paid California Service Corps, the largest service force in the nation. During the March 23 press conference, President Eanes underscored the importance of the #CaliforniansForAll College Corps program and how its transformative impact extends well beyond the University. Current Cal State LA student and College Corps Fellow Diego Ramos Lopez also spoke about his personal experience in the program. “I am a California DREAM Act student, which has often made me ineligible for such paid fellowships in the past,” said Lopez. “This experience has given me purpose. I am able to contribute to my community and develop valuable skills and connections that are helping me jump-start my career after college.” Cal State LA is the designated College Corps Consortia Lead Partner campus, collaborating with East Los Angeles College, Rio Honda College, and Cal Poly Pomona to serve low-income and under-resourced communities that span a 35-mile area in L.A. County. Learn more about California Volunteers.

Sal Castro Academy partners with local school districts to equip ethnic studies educators
The College of Education’s Sal Castro Academy for Urban Teacher Leaders has partnered with Hacienda La Puente Unified School District and El Rancho Unified School District to equip educators to deliver high-quality ethnic studies curriculum in preparation for a statewide mandate. The program offers a collective space for educators to engage in discussions on ethnic studies pedagogy and enhance their ability to champion student-centered approaches in their work. These partnerships come at a time when California has become the first state in the nation to require high school students to take at least one semester of ethnic studies before graduation. Under the new legislation, high schools must begin offering ethnic studies courses in the 2025-26 school year, resulting in the need for more ethnic studies teachers quickly.
